What weapon to use in a zombie outbreak?

What would you use in a Zombie outbreak? Be aware that guns make noise and melee can bring you too close to the zombies.

I would use a bow and arrow like Rambo. Its like a stealthy gun (or a Silenced MP5 SMG)

Chosen Answer:

Any zombie is subject to decay, and in more humid, warmer climes that process will be faster. Because of this all you need to do is to stay alive three to four days until the quickest ones start to slow down.

Guns do make far too much noise, and will attract the zombie hordes. If a gun must be used, get one that has a silencer if possible.

A machete has little to no real heat tempering, and lacks a “spine” – the thicker area of the blade when viewed in cross-section. When used against thick bone structures it will tend to dull or bend.

Axes have a relatively small area of useful blade, and are incredibly tip-heavy, throwing their wielder off-balance. The same goes for baseball bats, crowbars, pickaxes, mattocks, etc. They also stand a high risk of becoming lodged in bone.
Knives and cleavers require you to close and sever the neck/spinal cord. Too close.

Flame attacks are bad news, and may or may not work – the body is 90%water, and even a zombie will exude moisture as its tissues continue to necrose. Unless you can boil its brain, all you’re doing is charring the body.

The Japanese katana is the best weapon against zombies, as it is light, well-balanced, strong, and sharp enough to slice open a throat and continue on to sever the spinal column, possibly even decapitating the zombie.

An even greater weapon may be the climate itself. If the zombies are following you outdoors, and the temperature drops below freezing, then the zombies freeze solid. As I said, the body is 90% water, and water freezes, turning the undead into a zombiesicle. Most importantly, it freezes brain fluid and intercellular water – as fluid freezes, it expands and crystallizes. Inside the tight confines of the skull this freezing fluid will cause severe trauma to the brain, destroying the zombie.

I would bring a machete because it has multiple purposes, it is lightweight and easy to use. The best kind of gun is a bolt action rifle because one shot to the head will kill it, a machine gun has a large clip but not enough power in each bullet. I would also use a crowbar because it too serves many purposes, is lightweight.

probably a rail gun… causes mass havoc, impossible to jam, and is virtually silent (except the sonic boom and impact)

Flame thrower is the best weapon, because ashed bodies cant come back.

if there were guns like the ones on “mars attacks” I would se those.

but the best weapon to rely use would be a long handle razor sharp Scythe or Sickle and strong arms.

or a big pool of water and fri them with electricity. It will kill their brainwaves of what ever brain waves they have if its a viral zombie breakout, but if its sper natural, i would go with the syth and a water gun lined with something on the inside that can hold a high acid substance.

a 69 impala big block with a cattle catcher on the front

That depends upon how close you are to the zombies.

If they are far away and you are wanting to thin the herd, then use a high-powered rifle with a good scope. Pick off enough without wasting bullets.

Up close, I would want a good high-caliber pistol, either a .good 45 or .44 Magnum, to make sure and maximize the head damage. At worst, you can go for a torso shot to knock them down and then a head shot, but you don’t want to spend too much time aiming.

If the gun jams or you run out of rounds then pull out the katana, as Lord Bearclaw recommends.

No bludgeoning weapons–too unwieldy. No chainsaws–far too slow and too dangerous–you might cut your own arm off, or the arm of one of your companions. Absolutely no flamethrowers–not only do zombies feel no pain, they will then be coming to eat your brains *on fire*.

Explosives are only good if you can throw them at the zombies, such as if you have made it to a rooftop; if not, you risk getting caught in the explosion. If you can “herd” the zombies–who’s going to volunteer as the runner to funnel them?–then you can mow down groups of them with automatic or mounted and belt-fed weapons. Lots of graphic violence there.

Strangely enough, if the zombies are chasing you I have never seen anyone mention one low-tech trick to slow them down–marbles. Get a large bag, drop them behind you, and at least some of them will trip and, if luck holds, cause several others to trip–zombie logjam while you keep running.
