my opinion about the “stupidity of these people” in zombie movies is,
when “in their real life” with “real zombies” eating other “people”
its usually set in a time where there are no other such zombie like entities shown to the public ( me assuming here)

such as the 60s-70s movie, night of the living dead. (crying out loud that was black n white and practically the first one of its kind!)

oh and also if the zombie movie is more futuristic or up to date settings, even though the people themselves may be “illiterate” or not up to date with zombies but at least they band together n try n fight em off or hold out whatever it is they do.

…actually, in the recent re-envisioning of the original “Night of the Living Dead”, which was oh-so cleverly called “Nignt of the Living Dead 3D”, the people trapped in the farmhouse are, in fact, watching the original “Night of the Living Dead”, on a T.V. in the living room….and yet they STILL get popped off, one by one, by the zombies….

…as such, you may well be right, as far as stupidity being a prerequisite character trait, in zombie movies…irregardless of what useful, defensive and life-saving knowledge they may or may not have….
