Licensed Games Now Have Higher Expectations, March 21, 2013

When buying content-licensed games, it was always assumed, “this won’t be very good”. Sometime recently, however, that changed. With games like the Batman Arkham series, as well as the TellTale Walking Dead episodic game, it has been demonstrated that licensed games can be good, and as a result, should be good.

Walking Dead Survival Instinct is a classic example of what happens when you buy a license, rush a game to market, and then assume that it will sell based on the license, which it will. I had high hopes for the game, and walked away disappointed.

Story – The story of the game is fairly weak. It is a prologue to the Walking Dead television series, with a storyline focused on the Dixon brothers. By itself, that seems like it would make for good storytelling. Daryl Dixon is one of the series most popular characters, and this provides a great opportunity which was wasted. The story fell flat, often feeling forced or contrived.

Gameplay – Gameplay is weak at best, going from linear mission to linear mission. Collect something, avoid zombies, get into a truck, move on. Goals are often disjointed from the actual goals, where the goal post glowing green is 30 feet away from the actual goal.

Mechanics – The mechanics of the game aren’t very good. You basically are stuck with a knife, because your sight rifle is useless when you have a herd of walkers coming at you, and any gun shots will bring them to you quickly. The camera gets stuck frequently, and the frame rates are poor.

Overall, while I was hoping for something with a good story, what we received was a poorly executed mess.

OK, but nowhere near ZombiU in terms of quality, March 29, 2013

I like how it starts and makes you feel like it’s the show….but after a few minutes playing, I just got the feeling it could have been better, mainly in terms of the graphics, controls and overall gameplay. Also maybe I need to play it more, but just slashing with the knife a few times and then seeing the zombies fall to the ground seems kind of cheap and not well thought out just like hitting with the cricket bat repeatedly became redundant when playing ZombiU. It would have been nice to have better first person mechanics, pushing down, with cool button combos to finish the zombies off (kind of like the polished animations in SniperV2).

If you’re shopping for a zombie game on the Wii U, I would personally recommend ZombiU since that in my opinion, while flawed in many respects, is still one of the better zombie games, and one of the best games for the Wii U period. However, in some ways the Walking Dead does a few things right (voice acting, characters from the show) and if you’re a fan of the show, you’ll probably get some enjoyment from Survival Instinct especially since it’s easier and less frustrating than ZombiU, however, that’s not to say it’s the better choice between the two. I would rent or play a demo of this first and go from there.

I am calling BULL on the majority of the reviews I have read for “Survival Instinct”. Just read through them and you will see much of the same verbiage being repeated… word for word, like they were scripted from the same source. It’s almost like they have an agenda of hate because the release is from Activision, not a fan-boy favorite. And amazingly, the reviews began long before the game was released. Huh?
Well, after playing the whole game, I found it to be really fun! Sure the graphics are not fabulous, but the overall feel of the game captures the television show pretty well. Oh, and if you play it as a game, and don’t try and find ways you can cheat the intent of the designers, it’s mechanics actually reflect what finding your way through the start of a zombie apocalypse would be like.
While Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will never win awards, it is immensely enjoyable to play if you sit down and play it, instead of whining about what it could have been.
