There is no sanctuary.
That was taken away in the blink of an eye.  Humanity went out not with a whimper, but a bang.
Jack, a sometimes humorous, sometimes philosophical ex-special operations pilot and soldier is one of the few left to struggle through the desolation left in the aftermath; seeking to survive as a new ferocious species emerges from the rubble, hungry and unrelenting.  Will his special forces training be enough?  Will he be able to keep his children safe and guide the few survivors through perils that now roam the world they once knew?  Or will the hordes that now own the night prevail, forever removing the last of mankind from existence?  Humankind was once at the top of the food chain.  But that ha

Area 187 - Almost Hell

  • Used Book in Good Condition
In the year 2007 an accident at a clandestine U.S. government facility in rural West Virginia releases several test subjects infected with a necrotic virus. Within weeks the U.S. military and the Department of Homeland Security are forced to declare the bulk of the state under quarantine. Defensive lines are fortified and nothing is allowed in or out, damning those missed in the short period of evacuations to a living hell and locking away the real truth of the virus’ creation. The government transfers the responsibility of maintaining the quarantine from the military to the Department of Homeland Security, which christens it “Area 187”. Suits and claims are dismissed under anti-terror legislation as the rest of government scrambles t

The zombie theme is one I find interesting. I enjoyed how the author selected his words to accurately describe scenes and events. He used vocabulary effectively. This enabled the reader to feel the emotions inherent in the story. By use of vivid descriptions the author involved the reader in the many details of the book, enabling the reader to become personally involved with the plot (humor, suspense, fear, concern). The use of a clear chronological order of events helped me to feel the flow of the book. It was clear that the plot was headed in a certain direction. The vocabulary used was in some cases technical but I never did feel lost in the dialogue. I felt that the dialogue made an important contribution to the readability of the book. The interpersonal reactions between the characters were believable. The way the emotions were described enabled me to feel a connection with the plight of the characters.

It was a pleasant read. A very good first book.
Would I buy another from this author? Yes.
I look forward to the next one.

I found this book to be pretty boring until the last quarter. I confess to skipping huge portions of the book when he’s wandering around in his own mind. The flashbacks are completely unimportant to the story and a waste of time. It really strikes me as filler. I think that most people who don’t have the author’s background would find these memories to be hard to follow and make you wonder why they’re there. If aviation is your interest, then you might find them interesting.

The story didn’t really start to flow until the last part of the book. I had no intention of reading book two until I hit the end of book one and then I realized I had a strong desire to find out what was next. A New World:Chaos is essential to reading A New World:Return, so just force yourself through because book 2 is worth it.

I’ll admit that I was unsure of purchasing this book. I’m a full-time college student and every dollar counts for me. I had the sample sent to my Kindle and enjoyed it enough to give it a shot. Mr. Lowther’s story is very good. It is a different twist on the entire zombie uprising type of thing. It is a long book (which made me very happy) that is realistic in the facts of politics within the US government. I could easily believe that this is how things would happen if our nation was faced with this type of incident. His development of the characters was perfect and it was easy to connect with them. I have the highest praise for the work that he did on Area 187 and I will be purchasing more of his books when he publishes them. (So get to work!)

Now, that said, I do need to address the fact that the publisher on this book completely dropped the ball. I was extremely disappointed in the editing that was done on this book. I am the type of reader that becomes completely engrossed in a book when it is this good. I read much of this while my home was being pounded by a hurricane. But, when there are glaring mistakes made that even the most inexperienced of editors should have easily caught, it pulls me right out of the story and completely disorients me.

My suggestion? Dear Publisher: find another COMPETENT editor for Mr. Lowther’s books. His writing deserves that and those of us that purchase the book also deserve it. Don’t be the fly in the ointment for a very talented author.

I dont usually write reviews, but this one was worth my attention, what a fantastic find. Eric Lowther has written an absolutely stonking action adventure and I loved every second of it. His writing style is easy to read yet descriptive. More than a few times, I shuddered with revulsion and took a look around me, or in the dark of the night listened for the soft shuffle of an undead footstep. The story is creepy, believable and utterly engaging. More please…

Dont read this book at night in an empty house….trust me.

This review is from: Area 187 – Almost Hell (Paperback)

Full of captivating characters and edge of the seat action, Area 187-Almost Hell is a must read for the horror, action, or zombie aficionado. It takes the reader through the gamut of emotions, running with the main characters through zombie-infested territory, afraid of undead, cannibals, government agents, and themselves while searching for John’s last hope for humanity. You will find yourself holding your breath as they fight for their lives. Zombies are becoming de rigueur, but Eric R. Lowther has created a fresh take on the apocalypse situation, a realistic look at humanity and our country’s reaction to an outbreak. Highly entertaining, always engaging, and several twists merge to make a book you can’t put down. Go forth, and read!
